Robert Sternberg, the present-day guru of intelligence writes that the major factor in whether people achieve expertise “is not some fixed prior ability, but purposeful engagement.” Or, as his forerunner, Binet, recognized, it’s not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest. – Carol Dweck
( Hopefully, this next statement doesn’t offend you ) Rednecks have tan necks because they have been out working. If you want success you must get out and work. Get a T.A.N. lifestyle by Taking Action Now.
This article is a condensed version of a much larger process but the principles are simple. Figure out where you are. Decide where you want to go. Get a plan and get a T.A.N. Repeat until you get to your desired outcome.
This article could be complete right now but here’s a little extra food for thought…
I’ve been out speaking to people about dreams, goals, and success for years. I love to do it. Why else would I speak to someone? I’m not the casual conversation kinda guy. It’s just too darn hard for me to stand around and talk about the weather.
I want to know what’s really going on with you in your life. I want to know why you look so disgusted. I want to know what is making you happy in your life. I want to know how I can help you feel even better about what you can do with your God-given gifts, talents, and potential.
Why is that such a bad thing?
Yeah, you say that it’s a good thing but you don’t ask me about my life in such an open and interested discussion.
I’m not offended. I’m just curious. Fascinated even that I can ask question after question after question about you and you freely answer my questions. Until you reach that point where you think “huh, I don’t even know anything about you yet” at which point you say to me, “What about you?”

I love it…
This is what it means to be an interested listener. This is the life of the leader. This is the life of a networker. And, understanding this skill sets you up for personal success.
How does that sound to you?
Can you handle not being the center of attention?
How long can you stay interested in the person you’re speaking with?
I shake my head at how long I went about half-listening to people and calling myself a good listener. The truth of the matter is that I was an above average listener. Until I met someone who just looked into my eyes and said tell me more.
And, I did just that. I talked and talked.
That feeling I had at the end of the conversation with this person had me enamored with emotion. I was the most important person in the room from the moment that I heard the words “tell me more”.
Isn’t that interesting?
Well, get this… I was talking to myself. I had to reintroduce myself to myself when I decided it was time to make some real changes in my life. I had lost track of who I was, where I was, and what I was doing with my life. I had become a spectator in my own life!
Now, that’s about one of the stupidest things that a person can do. How can you sit back and not pay attention to the results that you are receiving in your life? Yet most people do exactly that. They wait for something good to happen. They wait for a bone to be thrown their way. They wait and wait and wait for ‘it’ to come their way.
HINT, HINT. That’s probably not going to happen.
You’re going to have to get your butt in motion and do something with your own life. That process begins with self awareness. Who are you? Where are you in your life? How did you get there? Who do you want to be? Where do you want to go? How do you get there?
If you’re like me, when you finished having that man-to-man talk with yourself you figured it was time to get some help. But, from where? Here are two of my favorite solutions: Holy Bible and Psycho-Cybernetics.
The first one is self explanatory. The second you will have to read to understand. There is only so much that our will can do for us. The real change happens from transforming our self image. Our self image is a product of our habits. So how do we change our habits? Read the book and found out.
