Eeny Meeny Miny Moe Wasn’t Just a Game

Do you remember playing eeny meeny miny moe? As a child, that was what the go-to method for making decisions. It was easy. “Eeny meeny miny moe, grab a tiger by its toe, if he hollers let him go, my mommy told me to pick the very best, and you are not it.”
You went through a process of elimination to choose teams for kick ball, to decide who go the last piece of candy, and who had to go knock on the door to ask the mean ol’ lady next door to get your ball out of her backyard. Now, I know some of you are saying that you used to shoot for it. That game came later in my life and it’s not the point anyway…
The point is: Have you learned the lesson hidden in those words?
I’m not saying to randomly choose what to eliminate in your life. Although, there really isn’t much randomness to eeny meeny miny moe once you know how many touches there are and you calculate who to start on so that you come out with the person that you want to pick. Was I the only nerd who did that?
The key phrase is “my mommy told me to pick the very best, and your are not it.” There is value in that phrase.
Often, we want to take on so many things in our lives that we forget what’s really important to us.
We start piling so much onto our plates that we lose sight of the salad that we were trying to eat. Again, I’m not the only one that goes to a buffet with a plan to eat just two plates, am I? Then, make sure I have more than enough on my plates so that I know that I’m satisfied. But, wind up with food still on my plate and craving dessert because I get to make my own swirl ice cream at the machine. Can somebody say caramel sauce and sprinkles? Yes, I want it all.

And, that’s how I used to approach my life.

Let me see if you can relate…
I made a decision to start a real estate investing business. That day I started researching the internet. I found forums, ebooks, and seminars. I chatted in forums, skimmed through ebooks and signed up for a major seminar. I spent half of my savings on that one seminar and the accompanying expenses. After the weekend seminar, I got to work implementing the techniques that I had learned.
It was slow at first. A lot of things didn’t pan out as I’d hoped. I was, after all, focusing on multiunits which meant that I was negotiating with sophisticated investors. I went for it, though. I put in offers on multi-million dollar deals that were all up and down the East coast.
I had no idea how I was going to come up with the money if I landed a deal. I was unemployed and trying to live of wits and hustle (and the other half of my savings). During the day, I’d hit the streets and hit the phones. At night, I’d be in forums and in books rethinking my strategy.
Then, I joined another company that was to help me become an Enlightened Millionaire. I focused on Real Estate and infopreneuring. They taught me how to be a transaction engineer. After attending one of their real estate seminars, I was even more fired up. I knew that I could make it happen.
My life changed quickly when I got in trouble for my partying and had to move from the East Coast back to the Midwest. My location changed but my desire to make it real estate didn’t. I got a job serving in a local chain restaurant and started putting money aside. Within three months, I purchased my first property and made almost $11k.
I don’t say this to brag. It’s only the first half of what I want to share with you today.

The contrasting story…

I believe a lot more of you will relate to this story than the first story. After having some success in real estate (while still working as a server, mind you), I started getting into more trouble with the law. I had some internal issues to deal with. That’s a different story, though. I made a decision to make that shift in my life once again.
My back was against the wall and I wanted to change. So, I got into network marketing. Then, I got into a different company. Got into trouble again. Decided to make a change. I started writing blogs. Started learning about internet marketing and joined a company. Then, I got into making videos for YouTube and for Facebook. Life started getting good again and tried my luck. I got into trouble again.
I didn’t have any direction. I was blogging, shooting videos, doing network marketing, trying to market affiliate products, working a job, trying to manage rental properties, and become a speaker. I was reading, watching every free webinar I could, finding free books and courses, attending free real estate events, and signing up for free coaching. Do you see a pattern?

Small beginnings, done well, lead to larger works.
I went from focusing on mastering one thing, paying for the expertise in that area, and getting to work on that one thing to trying to master everything and get free resources to get there. The former process worked. The latter process didn’t.
Refine your focus. Fine tune your vision. Get rid of the distractions. Narrow down your sights and watch how the world opens up to you.
Stop trying to be all things to all people. You serve no one by doing that.

I’m good at a lot of things.

God has given me a lot of talent. I’m a great speaker. I’m a great teacher. I’m a great coach. I’m becoming great as a writer and entrepreneur. And, I will be a great father and a great husband. Those are the things that I will focus on each day to improve.
I had to eliminate a lot of the other distractions in my life – those people, places, and things that do not serve my God-given purpose or my personal mission. And, that’s not selfish. Scripture tells us “to seek His Kingdom and all other things will come unto you”.
I had to go through a process of elimination. Tim Ferriss said, “What you don’t do determines what you can do.” That isn’t just about what career path that you want to go into. It applies to all areas of your life. It speaks to sacrifice. You can do ALL THINGS through that power that’s inside of you. However, you cannot do EVERYTHING. That’s both humbling and empowering.
You’re not meant to do everything in the world. You have a few areas that you’re going to be great in. Some have more areas and some of you have fewer areas. I’m talking about being great, though. This isn’t about just being good.

What do you want to be great at?

Have you defined your personal mission? Have you thought about how you’re going to get there? Do you have a process for making that switch? Do you know how you’re going to #rebootandrebuild your life? Here’s how I did it…
